Great stuff as usual Charles. Good to see someone giving some attention to NAM. It often goes overlooked and I don't really know much about what the organization has been up to. What are some of the latest concrete initiatives that NAM has put forward in recent years?

Thanks, Andrej.

On May 4, 2021, the Non-Aligned Movement held a virtual Summit on COVID-19, convoked by Azerbaijan, a country straddling Western Asia and Eastern Europe, which is serving as president of NAM from 2019 to 2022. Forty heads of state participated; Cuba was represented by its Minister of Health. The Summit stressed the importance of unity in confronting COVID-19. It called for the development of new, creative initiatives in confronting the virus. It established a Task Force to create a database that will indicate the basic humanitarian and medical needs of NAM member states, which will subsequently be submitted to all potential donors in order to attract support for the needs of the member states. It also stressed that the Movement’s principles of cooperation and mutual support are more important than ever in confronting COVID-19 and the challenges of the post-pandemic world. In addition to the representatives of particular countries, the Virtual Summit was addressed by the UN Secretary-General, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, and the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, who commended China and Cuba for their role in supporting the response of African countries to the virus.

In May 2020, the Non-Aligned Movement declared that any future action by Israel toward the annexation of the West Bank to the occupied territories would be a serious violation of international law. It issued a communique asking the international community to take strong measures against illegal actions by Israel. The communique also called upon the international community to cut commercial relation with Israel to prohibit the importation of products made in the occupied territories.
