I totally agree. In fact my friend Vijay Prashad write a lot on anti-imperialism in Latin America and says that leftists in western countries by and large ignore all the efforts and gains made in Latin America as we see now. Also, glad to read you see China as anti-imperialist even as it becomes an economic power. Power does not mean capitalism.

the fact that US has had imperial ambitions has not been talked about much in many parts of the world that where people were busy warding off their imperialist powers i.e. England or France in most cases. As the colonizing role of the US becomes more apparent lets hope public opinion across the world also reflects that, not only in select circles as is the case now, but more widely.

Thank you, Deepika, for your commentary. In many parts of the world anti-imperialist consciousness is not very well developed among the people, even though they suffer the consequences of imperialism, as you observe. A reason for this is that the U.S. corporate elite frames issues in a form makes neocolonial structures invisible, and it has the capacity to disseminate this myopic view through the means of communication. At the same time, many of the upper classes in the nations of the world are economically and ideologically allied with imperialism.

However, anti-imperialism is present. It has been central to Latin American popular consciousness for the past 100 years, and today it is as strong as ever, with Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Bolivia serving as vanguard nations. In addition, anti-imperialist thinking has been central in the declarations of the Non-Aligned Movement, first during the classic period of 1955 to 1982, and then in a renewal of its classic principles from 2006 to the present. At the same time, China openly declares for anti-imperialist principles and has formulated in theory and practice a foreign policy based on mutually-beneficial trade among nations, the antithesis of imperialism.

The responsibility of academics, journalists, and intellectuals today is to formulate and disseminate anti-imperialist consciousness among the people in the countries where they live and work.
